Pottery and  Ceramic Sculpture Courses with Ama Menec

Ama Menec teaching student Sue Bicks.I teach one-to-one and small group classes, (maximum number 3), from my studio near Totnes. I do not have a set syllabus, preferring to enable each student to develop their own individual projects and work at their own pace.

My workshop is equipped with a wide range of materials and equipment, making it possible to explore nearly every area of ceramics. Some of the techniques and processes that I can offer include majolica, slip decoration, sgraffito, under-glaze, oxide washes, low, mid and high fire glazes, use of resists, porcelain, paperclay, smoke firing, Egyptian paste, throwing, hand-building, sculpting, mould-making and glaze theory.

Lessons usually last 2 hours, but intensive courses can be arranged to fit around a holiday in beautiful South Devon. Mostly I teach Wednesdays and Thursdays; day-time or evening, hours to suit you, lessons cost £13 per hour for one to one tuition and £9 per hour each for shared lessons, (but bring a chum to share the lesson with!). Plaster mould making courses are £15 per hour.

Apprenticeships in Ceramic Sculpture

Ceramic Sculptor and tutor Ama Menec is looking for apprentices as she develops her new Garden Sculpture range. If you are interested in developing your ceramic skills and experiencing first hand the business end of a ceramic studio then this is the placement for you.

It is essential for a would-be apprentice to have some basic clay working skills such as the ability to wedge clay, roll coils and accurately weigh out glaze ingredients. Full training will be given in press moulding, fettling and adjusting leather-hard sculptures, mould making, glaze testing, kiln packing and firing.

A driving licence and the ability to interact with the public are also useful as the position may involve assisting at shows. There will also be some heavy lifting.

The studio, (shared with potter Lea Phillips), is 1 ½ miles from Totnes and lifts can be arranged to and from Totnes train station. The position is part time, 1 to 2 days a week. A typical day in the studio would start at 11am.

Mostly, the ability to learn, and a desire to become skilled are the two essential qualities needed. Deaf ceramicists are also welcome to apply as Ama has BSL skills.

Although this placement is unpaid, there is a huge value associated with the skills and business development experience. Ama can also give advice on individual projects apprentices are working on.

If you are interested please contact Ama on 07943 803551.
